Inspired by the classic fairy tale, The Little Match Girl is reimagined as a multimedia animation project that sheds light on the growing issue of child poverty in the Netherlands. Through art, education, storytelling, and film, this project aims to go beyond awareness and push for action.
At the heart of this project is an animated short film, co-created with children from different neighborhoods in Amsterdam.
The animation portrays the dreams and desires of children in poverty, offering a deeply personal glimpse into their world.
Premiering at Cinekid Festival 2022, the film has since won six international film festival awards, including Best Animation at Baba Desi Australia and selections at Universal Kids Film Festival and Boston International Kids Film Festival.

Collaborations
Under the guidance of professional animator Mickey Cohen, a team of young illustrators developed a contemporary version of the tale. Each child contributed their own interpretation of who the Match Girl is, ensuring she represents the many faces of poverty today.
